Magic News

Magic sweeps the weekend

On Saturday coach Dylann traveled with the team to compete against WSM Strikers. After coaching the U12 girls team Impact, coach Dylann rushed up to Portland to go 2-0 for the day. The Magic won their game with a nice goal from Toni Malone. The Magic survived a wave of attacks in the first 10 minutes before the battled back and scored the winning goal. Sahalie Doe had another standout performance. The girls played much better possession and connected well with each other. The speed of play still needs to get a lot faster as well as the consistency of our first touch. However, given that the girls practice on grass all week and then play on turf, both coaches agree that there is good progress in the girls' technical abilities.
On early Sunday morning, the Magic hosted the Keizer Hotshots at Cal Young MS. The foggy morning did not prevent the Magic players to connect well with each other in the first 15 minutes. In a beautiful build up from the back to the left side, Taylor Suttles switched the point of attack with a nice diagonal ball that found Toni Malone 15 yards away from goal. Her shot went underneath the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The Hotshots responded immediately and pounded our goal with shots. The crossbar and Sahalie helped to preserve the lead. The Magic players did not compete against the physical play of the Keizer team which allowed them to keep the ball in our half. At halftime the girls readjusted and took on the 1v1 battles that are so important in every soccer game. Slowly but consistently we won the ball, kept and possessed it, created opportunities for ourselves and prevented shots for the opponent. For the first time this season, the Magic won both their games.
All in all a very good weekend for the Magic. In the coming weeks, we will continue to work on increasing our speed of play, improve our first touch under pressure, improve our conditioning so we can keep the intensity for a full game, and sharpen our attacking game.
Another focus will be to make sure that all girls are more comfortable dribbling the ball when it is appropriate and possibly taking on a defender.
