Azzurri News

It was a dark weekend for the Azzurri that saw the very best and the very worst of what we have to offer. After coming off a frustrating two game home stand the previous weekend that produced two sets of matching goose eggs we hit the road to play the top of our league. Our Saturday game found us as slow as the ball rolling through the hay field we were playing on. The first half was a nasty mix of not marking and not finishing. After a quick regroup at half time we managed to produce a couple rays of sunshine mostly in some great ball movement through the midfield and out into space on the opposite side of the field for some beautiful crosses into the box. We also managed to sort out our defensive marks and put a stop to the unearned attempts on goal that riddled the first half.

After a disheartening lose on Saturday we once again hit the road to play the undefeated first place team in the league. The dreaded Aztecas. Despite a sloppy warm up and 6 sets of sprints to regain our focus we managed to do something that we have yet to accomplish this season. We came out hard and focused. And we didn’t just put up a good fight, we dominated them. With a goal in the first 5 minutes and another midway through the Aztecas struggling to get on our half and get a shot off we went into half time with a 2 – 0 lead. However this game, as was describe afterwards, was to be the tale of two halves. And for those of us that recall our Dickens novels we know that they rarely ended well. As easily as we had found our focus and our desire, our sharp passing and finishing, and our ability and willingness to win every 50/50 ball it was gone. In the time it took to say good work, keep it up, 30 minutes to go it was gone. The second half saw us lose our lead in the first ten minutes and then fall behind by fist one and then a second goal.

Despite the disappointing results of the weekend there are a few very important things to be gained from it. First of all ability is there to beat any team we come across. And not just any team. The undefeated first place team. And not just beat them but crush them. Also we know what it is we have to do. Make the effort to win the 50/50 ball, to make a sharp pass, to get back a mark up on defense, to communicate and anticipate the game. We know we can do it. Now we just half to choose to do it. Finally we know that it is better to have lead and lost, then to have never lead before.
