Preparing for College

The process to select a college for students is a difficult road and most high schools provide road maps, counselors, and advise to navigate through the seemingly endless roads that lead to a college education. Selecting the perfect college to suit the academic needs and desires of students and then finding financial solutions to make it an affordable choice for the families is in itself a difficult task.

The additional complications of athletics are further complicating the process and decisions students have to make. EMFC does neither have the resources, the knowledge, nor the manpower to provide all our players with the support system needed in this difficult process. However, many of our players want and are capable of playing soccer in college. In order to provide some help and support for the players and their families, EMFC has come up with a list of resources that can be used to get a head start on the college preparation process.

Please read Allison Wonn's article about this process in our Spring 2011 newsletter edition about her "own path".

In addition to selecting the perfect academic fit for a student and allowing the student athlete to continue to play soccer on a higher level, unreasonable expectations of athletic scholarships often make the process even more complicated and provide unnecessary distractions. I found a good series of articles outlining some of those challenges in athletic scholarships.

In March of 2008, the New York Times, printed a series of articles with the title The Scholarship Divide, exploring the chase for N.C.A.A. scholarships, the scarcity of athletic aid, and the challenge facing coaches and scholarship athletes. Much can be learned by reading through these articles about the myths and realities of athletic scholarships.

On December 5, 2011, Mac Wilson, assistant coach at the University of Oregon gave a presentation at the South Eugene HS cafeteria about the process to play college soccer. Here is his presentation in a powerpoint format.

Please use the following handouts as guidelines for preparing yourself for college. These handouts do not replace your high school counselor and other valuable sources of college preparation and selection.
